for a Greener Oakville.
I live near Oakville Town Hall.
I want Oakville and Halton Region to build a community garden near me, as soon as possible.
Our Vision: more Community Gardens for Oakville
The Town of Oakville wants to be the ‘most livable town in Canada.’
Trafalgar Road is going to get dense, with many new apartment and condominium buildings.
Many won’t have gardens.
There’s now a four year waiting list for an Oakville community garden spot.
We want Oakville, and Halton Region, to build more.
There are plenty of spots available. One is at Reservoir Park, at Trafalgar and Leighland Avenue.

Why Community Gardens?
- Reduce Food Bills:
Food prices are going up. You can save money by growing your own. It’s also healthier.
- Meet your Neighbours: Community gardens let you meet new people who live near you. They’re a great way to build new connections.
- Get Outside! Gardening means getting active and moving outdoors.
- Educational Opportunities: You can learn about what kinds of gardening works, and just see nature at work.

Our Vision
We imagine a community garden of about 2000 square feet on the easternmost ‘triangle’ of land in Reservoir Park. There will be space for raised beds and clear pathways, accessible especially to senior citizens.
This easternmost portion of Reservoir Park is very under-used. It’s just north of new apartments and existing condominiums and a seniors’ residence. We think it can be put to better, inexpensive, uses.
We’re not fixed on a particular design, so if you have suggestions or comments or interesting design ideas, let us know.
The Town and Region have been studying the issue of creating more community gardens for a number of years now. Help us give them an incentive to move a little more swiftly.

There's a Need for Community Gardens
- In May 2023 the Oakville Community Foundation found that in Halton Region, 13% of respondents to one survey could not afford balanced meals. 6% went hungry.
- This applies to youth too. 18% of respondents to one survey said their family could not afford the food for more balanced meals.
- Meanwhile there’s isolation, especially among seniors, with the Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre Food Bank giving 640 meals in 2022 for this group.
- Are we Hungry? OCF report
Community gardens on their own can’t solve the problem of hunger or isolation, but they’re another way to help people help themselves.

Start a Community Garden in Your Neighbourhood
We think a four year waiting list means there’s a lot of demand for these gardens.
If you want help in asking the Town to create one near you, let us know.
